Editor’s Note: (This article contains spoilers for the first season of “1923.”)
During the glitz and glam of the red-carpet event known as the Golden Globes, Brandon Sklenar, the actor who plays Spencer Dutton in the “Yellowstone” prequel “1923”, dropped a few tidbits of info about the show’s production.
And although the second season of “1923” has been confirmed that it will indeed continue, fans still don’t have a clue as when the release date will be.
Sklenar dropped some hints about the show’s production at the 2023 Golden Globes event, which reunited much of the Paramount+ show’s cast since it was nominated for Best Drama Series. Outside of this nod, “1923” cast member Helen Mirren was also nominated for her portrayal of 20th century Dutton matriarch Cara Dutton.
Joining Mirren and Sklenar, was acting legend Harrison Ford along with “1923” alum Michelle Randolph, Julia Schlaepfer, Aminah Nieves, and Darren Mann who were all in attendance to support the show. During a red-carpet interview with Fox News, Sklenar said he was looking forward to actually filming with Mirren and Ford on the “Yellowstone” prequel’s final eight episodes.
"I haven't gotten to act with them yet,” Sklenar told Fox News. “I will in the last eight episodes that we're about to start...It's happening, and I'm stoked, I'm excited."
When “1923” ended in February of 2023, it ended on a cliffhanger, which is almost too much to bear for many of the show’s fanbase. Add to this a writer’s strike, and rumors of trouble in “Yellowstone” paradise, it’s no wonder fans of Taylor Sheridan’s universe are always seeking info on their favorite show’s installments.
Last time we caught up with Spencer Dutton, he was being taken away on a lifeboat after accidentally pushing a debutant overboard to his death. He never even made it to the states, let alone Montana. Knowing that Sklenar will soon join Mirren and Ford to start filming the final episodes gives fans of this series hope and some story closure. If Spencer joins his aunt Cara and uncle Jacob, then you know he’s going to make it home. This only adds fuel to the already palpable anticipation surrounding what Sklenar says will be the end of the show.
In May of 2023, Sklenar told the Hollywood Reporter during a press panel that the series is "limited," closing the door on any questions regarding the show's continuation. "No, no, it's bookend,” Sklenar said. “It's still limited, but I think of it as one piece — there’s just a split in the middle, but it’s all one piece. It will conclude."
This means the final eight episodes are it for the cast of “1923” thus ending another western run for Sheridan who is busy working on his new show “Land Man,” based on Texas Monthly's podcast “Boomtown” created by Christian Wallace. In early November of 2023, Sheridan released “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” starring David Oyelowo as the legendary lawman on Paramount+.
As for news of the second half of season five of “Yellowstone,” it too is expected to be complete by the fall of this year. Sklenar says he hadn’t heard anything about “Yellowstone” stating, “They run a pretty tight ship over there in terms of like information. I'm still waiting for a couple scripts for next season and we leave in a couple months. It's kind of exciting that way. You don't really know until you know."
Well, there you have it Sheridan fans, it looks like we’ll have to know when we know.
