Carter Community Artists
Artists Sarah Ayala, Raul Rodriguez, Lingchia Tsai, and Blake Weld all will offer their own personal backgrounds and style to the museum’s collection and exhibitions through October 2019 to September 2020.
Four artists announced by the Amon Carter Museum this week will comprise this year’s Carter Community Artists, a program aimed at reimagining what it means to produce American art.
Artists Sarah Ayala, Raul Rodriguez, Lingchia Tsai, and Blake Weld all will offer their own personal backgrounds and style to the museum’s collection and exhibitions through October 2019 to September 2020.
“Sarah Ayala explores concepts of repetition and meditation, traditional gender roles, and her Latinx culture,” an announcement from the Carter reads. “Documentary photographer Raul Rodriguez uses his camera to highlight subcultures and social issues relevant to Latinx communities. Influenced by Chinese poetry and philosophy, Lingchia Tsai is interested in the symbolism of natural elements and expressive mark-making. Blake Weld combines sculpture and performance art, using everyday items to design absurd objects that move and perform simple tasks.”
The Carter Community Artist initiative, established in 2018, aims to support and collaborate with local artists. Carter staff say the goal is to further connect with the North Texas community by way of exploring “playfulness [and] highlighting communities of color.”
“This year we are pleased to be welcoming four new artists from DFW to continue building upon the foundation we established in the inaugural year of the Carter Community Artists initiative,” says Jessica Fuentes, manager of school and community outreach. “The work our artists have done, and the new class will continue to do, with students, visitors, and teachers has provided a pathway for new or, in some cases, a first, connection with art.”
The Carter this year also plans to expand programming to cater to all age audiences.
