Artists of color are at the forefront of the Fort Worth Community Arts Center's next exhibit — "Our Faces, Our Voices" — opening on Sept. 4.
The exhibit will showcase 15 local artists of various mediums and styles, with women making up more than 50% of the show. According to the Fort Worth Community Arts Center, minority men and women have historically been underrepresented in western art, citing a recent study of 18 museums across the U.S. that estimated that 85% of art in their collections are by white artists.
Co-curated by Raymond Wyatt and Shauna Benoit, the works featured in "Our Faces, Our Voices" range from traditional oil painting to photography and video, with a particular emphasis on self-portraits. According to a news release, the artists "hope to inspire the next wave of minority children who typically do not get to see people like themselves within the halls of museums and galleries. In their own way, each artist has been giving a voice to aspects of history previously untold, and changing the way we see the world and their place in it."
"Our Faces, Our Voices" will run through Nov. 7. Here's the full list of featured artists:
