Darn, Cincinnati.
Well, folks, it looks like our Fort Worth Zoo was knocked from its No. 1 post this year on USA Today's 10Best list. The publication released its list of 10 Best Zoos determined by popular vote, an expert panel, and 10Best editors. Last year, Fort Worth came out at No. 1.
This year, the top spot went to the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden.
But hey, we can't complain too hard — Fort Worth still ranked at No. 2, followed by Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, and the Nashville Zoo. The Dallas Zoo ranked at No. 9.
On the Fort Worth Zoo, USA Today wrote: "Established in 1909, the Fort Worth Zoo is the oldest continuously operated zoo in Texas and home to more than 540 animal species from around the world. More than 100 of those species are part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan, and 68 are endangered or threatened. An international leader in Asian elephant conservation, the zoo recently opened the all-new Elephant Springs — home to a multi-generational herd of seven Asian elephants and greater one-horned rhino, this new space includes multiple lush green spaces and numerous watering holes, including a 400,000-gallon river for the herd to submerge and swim."
OK, that's not bad at all.
