Friday on the Green
Near Southsiders almost — almost — got back one of the district's beloved events that COVID-19 canceled last year, with Friday on the Green initially scheduled to take place Sept. 10.
Well, music fans no longer have to save that date. Economic development group Near Southside, Inc., has announced that Friday on the Green is canceled again this year, "due to public health concerns," according to its email newsletter.
The live music series at Magnolia Green — which had traditionally taken place on the second Friday of April, May, June, September, and October — had hinted a one-night-only event in September but had not yet announced a performer. Near Southside, Inc., intends to bring the event back in 2022, assuming pandemic conditions improve.
So what does that mean for ArtsGoggle, the Magnolia Avenue arts festival set to take place Oct. 16?
Well, as of this moment, ArtsGoggle is still on. According to Near Southside, Inc., the organization is "closely monitoring COVID conditions as we continue planning for ArtsGoggle. We will continue consulting with our Medical District’s public health experts in assessing conditions and trends over the next couple of weeks before announcing a decision to either keep the event as scheduled or to postpone."
