A mural on the Near Southside unveiled Sunday is as expressive as the classical music, one of humanity’s most important cultural inventions, it depicts.
“Chromesthesia,” which came to life on the corner of South Main Street and Vickery Boulevard through a partnership with The Cliburn, SoMa Development, and Near Southside Arts, made its debut to coincide with the 60th anniversary of The Cliburn International Piano Competition. The 16th Cliburn, a quadrennial event, begins June 2.
The mural, featuring an array of colorful piano keys, emanated from the genius of DAAS, an Austin-based contemporary muralist.
Chromesthesia is a condition in which people see colors in response to nonvisual stimuli, such as instrumental music and song, considered by many to be the highest form of art.
“What a great way to take advantage of the vibrations that a piano makes, how strong they are, and how color can be generated from that in people's minds and visually,” says DAAS, who has done work in Japan, China, Italy, and Nepal, among others.
The mural can be found at 113 South Main St.
