Thanksgiving Day means different things to all sorts of people. We can celebrate our history, our families or our communities. One way many Fort Worth runners celebrate is by participating in the Fort Worth YMCA Turkey Trot!
The 34th Turkey Trot returns to Fort Worth starting at 6:00 a.m. on Nov. 26 at the Village at Camp Bowie. The races will start at 8:00 a.m. with the 1K Gobbler Trot starting off the day’s activities. The 10K will follow at 8:15 a.m. and 5K, the event’s biggest race, will start at 8:30 a.m.
After the race concludes, runners can enjoy great food and great company at the RLB Sales and Leasing dealership on Camp Bowie for a post race party. Stop by to grab some barbeque provided by 2015 Best BBQ winner Billy's Oak Acres BBQ, tacos provided by 2013 Best Food Truck Surprise winner Taco Heads, hot coffee, music and much more!
You might know RLB as the local dealership with the famous Jackalope statue sitting on its roof on Camp Bowie. Local artist Nancy Lamb first built this Fort Worth landmark as a commission from the owners of the “Jackalope Store” in the early 1980s. After the original “Jackalope Store” closed, RLB bought the statue and preserved its spot on the boulevard. This 8-foot-tall jackalope, constructed out of wire and fiberglass, has been a part of the Fort Worth community for more than 30 years.
The Turkey Trot has been a part of Fort Worth's culture for about as long as this statue. The Turkey Trot started in 1981 with just the 5K race. This family-oriented event has grown to include more than 12,000 participants making it the largest event in the Fort Worth YMCA system.
All of the proceeds from the Turkey Trot benefit the scholarship and youth programs of the Westside YMCA. This helps the YMCA say, “Yes!” to more families that want to participate or utilize the services of the Y.
So come out on your Turkey Day to participate in the Turkey Trot and the RLB post race after party. Watch our community come together for a great cause and to celebrate our great history.
