Iconic cellist Yo-Yo Ma will no longer be playing at the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra's Annual Gala at Dickies Arena on Feb. 20.
While the FWSO did not disclose why Ma will no longer be available, the orchestra did announce a replacement — world-renown pianist Yuja Wang, who'll perform Rachmaninoff's "Piano Concerto No. 2" and Tchaikovsky's "Symphony No. 4." She'll join the orchestra alongside conductor Eric Jacobsen.
“While we are certainly disappointed Yo-Yo Ma is unable to join us, Fort Worth should be proud of the resiliency of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra for continuing to keep the music playing,” Keith Cerny, president and CEO of the FWSO, said in a statement. “We are very fortunate to have Yuja Wang headlining and performing the extraordinary Rachmaninoff: 'Piano Concerto No. 2.' We appreciate all the support from the community and are looking forward to a very special evening of live music and entertainment.”
Wang was born in Beijing, often lauded for not just her talent but also her charismatic stage presence. She comes to Fort Worth on the heels of a busy 2019 – 2020 season, which included performances, season residencies, and tours. Among her most recent appearances was a performance with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, which Jacobsen also conducted.
