Birria taco at Birrieria Y Taqueria Cortez
The countdown's on for the opening of a popular taco trailer's first brick-and-mortar location.
Birrieria Y Taqueria Cortez — the Eastside food truck that attracted droves when it first opened — will open its first sit-down restaurant Sunday at 2108 E. Rosedale St., the former Los Taco H's. The restaurant will be open 9 a.m. – 10 p.m. and feature live music as guests dine on tortas, quesadillas, and the signature birria tacos — grilled tacos dipped in a broth called consommé.
The brick-and-mortar stands not too far from Birrieria Y Taqueria Cortez's original location at 2220 E. Rosedale St., where guests can order via drive-thru. Both the 2220 E. Rosedale St. truck and second truck at 3108 N. Main St. will continue operating when the brick-and-mortar opens.
Birrieria Y Taqueria Cortez is the brainchild of owner Rogelio Cortez, who first brought his truck to the Eastside in February 2020. While birria has existed for decades, the tacos have seemingly grown trendy the past couple of years thanks to foodie influencers on social media. Cortez — who credits his grandmother, Aurelia Cortez, a native of La Noria, Jalisco, for the original recipe — puts his own spin on the dish, with a cheese variation known as "quesatacos" and also a pizza version.
