As if this pair of home-grown barbecue joints hasn’t gotten enough media attention as of late, Goldee’s which this year was named the best barbecue in the state by Texas Monthly, and Panther City BBQ, which just made headlines by breaking the record for longest barbecue marathon ever, were recently featured on the third season of “BBQuest: Beyond the Pit” on Hulu.
In the running for coolest job one could imagine, series host and Texas native, Kelsey Pribilski, takes viewers on a journey to all of the best barbecue joints in the Lone Star State, talking to pitmasters and tasting secret menu items.
Goldee's Bar-B-Q
Goldee's gets a solid plug in episode three, “Texas Trailblazers.” The popular spot first won the hearts of Fort Worthians in 2020 and smoked their way to the top of Texas Monthly’s Top 50 BBQ Joints in 2021. While there, Pribilski, along with co-host Jess Pryles, dug into the brisket, beef ribs, and cheesy grits.
“We try the food every day all together and always try to make it better,” co-owner, Lane Milne, shares when asked what the secret is to Goldee’s success.
Milne reveals the team at Goldee’s consists of six people, some knowing each other since elementary school. Sometimes when the team is feeling overwhelmed, they call on three to four Goldee’s regulars from the community to tap in.
“It really hasn't hit. The process of opening up and going through the pandemic was a lot of ups and downs. When we were named number one, a mix of emotions came in,” Goldee’s co-owner, Nupohn Inthanousay, says. “Overall, we’ve gone through this together — all the hardships. We don’t say this out loud, but I think we are pretty proud of ourselves. We were pushing the food that we enjoy eating and serving people.”

In the fourth episode, “Family and Community,” “BBQuest” struts to Panther City BBQ, where they eat on Fort Worth’s favorite elote, albondigas, and chilaquiles — all, naturally, with brisket. Wrapping it all up with the “star of the show” were the Flaco’s tacos – deep fried in heavenly beef tallow.
“Living in a Tex-Mex household, these flavors are near and dear to my heart,” Panther City BBQ pitmaster, Chris Magallanes, says. “Everything we grew up with had a bit of spice in it, and everyone in the family made it a bit different. We like to introduce our own little flair into it, but still keep the same base quality of it and introduce that to our barbecue instead of chasing the same thing over and over.”
