Local businesses ran with all sorts of jokes on April Fools' Day, but perhaps few matched in brilliance with FunkyTown Donuts and Drafts, which posted a photo April 1 of a rather tantalizing-looking glazed doughnut topped with a Best Maid pickle slice.
"Our doughnuts are kind of a big dill!" the post read. "New pickle doughnuts available today only, very limited supply!"
A few gullible pickle fans made the trek to FunkyTown only to find out the pickle doughnut was an April Fools' joke, taking home something else instead — perhaps the iconic maple bacon or lemon raspberry — but also wondering what this dream of a doughnut might have tasted like if it actually existed.
Turns out, this quixotic concoction was actually pretty delicious, so FunkyTown tweaked the recipe a bit and is now getting ready to debut the doughnut at an upcoming event with Lone Star Taps & Caps.
Lone Star Taps & Caps will serve FunkyTown's pickle doughnut at its Breakfast Beers, Let's Get Weird! event on April 10. The ticketed breakfast will feature plenty more wonky flavors, courtesy of Martin House Brewing Company, like breakfast cereal-inspired beers and a coffee stout made with Avoca coffee and cream.
And, of course, there's the pickle doughnut, dipped in a pickle glaze and topped with a fried pickle and pipette of pickle juice.
A limited quantity of the doughnuts will be available during the event, so it's first come, first serve, according to Lone Star Taps & Caps. Ticket information for Breakfast Beers, Let's Get Weird! is available here.
