No need to drive to Oklahoma to get a taste of the state's signature onion burgers — Magnolia Avenue is now home to the Kelly’s Onion Burgers food truck, serving the novelty a little closer to home.
Andrew and Joe Kelly grew up in El Reno, Oklahoma, eating onion burgers with their family. After moving out of the state, the two brothers and their dad, Mike, started making the burgers at home before eventually getting the idea to start a food truck.
Kelly’s Onion Burgers launched three months ago. Their first location was on Race Street, but they now reside on Magnolia, where they’re looking to take advantage of the plentiful foot traffic and friendly community. The truck is located between Maggie's R&R and Ephemera Terrariums, sharing the lawn with another recently opened food truck, Shawerma Man.
“Since we got to Magnolia about three weeks ago, everybody that's in business in that area on that street, they're just so nice. They'll help you do whatever you need to do if you need assistance with something,” Mike Kelly says.
So what can you expect from a Kelly’s Onion Burger? “Basically, what we do is essentially a smash burger. So, we slice the onions really thin, smash the onions into the meat, and you lose about half of them in juice that cooks into the meat. And then, the remainder of the onions around the edges of the burger, they get really crispy. And then in the center, you've got the caramelized onions,” Andrew Kelly said.
To try the Kellys' burgers, fries, and drinks, find them on Magnolia from 5:30 p.m. – 11 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. They look forward to improvements in their setup that will soon allow them to stay from 10 a.m. – 11 p.m. The truck can also be booked for events.
