The Yucatan Tequila Bar & Grill
Robert Causey had his work cut out for him when he took over what was then called Yucatan Taco Stand on Magnolia Avenue. The taco joint, though known for its nachos and particularly potent margaritas, closed down in 2019 following 34 demerits from the city's health inspector.
When the business turned over to Causey, he had one word to describe the state it was in: "Disgusting."
"Picture the worst college bar you've ever been to and multiply it by 10," he says.
After an extensive renovation that revamped everything from the walls to the bathrooms (and hopefully eliminated the smell that seeped into the dining room), the restaurant changed its name to The Yucatan Tequila Bar & Grill and reopened at 909 W. Magnolia Ave. in March 2020 — only to be relegated to to-go orders only at the strike of the COVID-19 pandemic.
But now, with the dining room running and capacity up to 100%, The Yucatan is celebrating its grand opening — nearly a year after it opened last March — with a 12-hour fiesta taking place from 2 p.m. – 2 a.m. on Saturday.
Causey promises a family-friendly atmosphere with piñatas, face painting, and a balloon twister for the kids; but there will be plenty for the adults to enjoy as well. A giant blender will be set up at the front of the building so guests can sample margaritas, discounted drink specials will be available, and live music from a mariachi band and DJ will set the tone for what Causey hopes will be a high-energy event.
Additionally, artist Lauren Enyart will be onsite to live-paint a mural for the restaurant.
The Yucatan's menu features a slew of Tex-Mex options from a signature tempura fish taco to Baja-style tortas and entrées like diablo shrimp and fajitas. Sweeter offerings include Bavarian cream-stuffed churros, tres leches cake, and housemade horchata.
Causey says masks will be required upon entering the restaurant. He's weighing whether or not to keep COVID-19 protocols in place as he hears customer feedback.
Still, if there's one thing he's thankful for, it's simply to be open.
"I feel very grateful and fortunate how it unfolded for us," Causey says.
