The COVID-19 pandemic is taking yet another restaurant away from us.
McKinley's Fine Bakery and Cafe officially closes Saturday, giving diners just a few more days to grab one last chicken salad sandwich and baked treat. The eatery had been a staple in University Park Village for more than a decade.
In last week's Facebook post announcing the closure, owner Stacey Rumfelt wrote, "Operating a small restaurant with a large dining room in a high rent retail area does not seem to be the best business strategy for us in the current environment." She also added that she plans to spend more time with family and is "not in a rush" to reopen in another location.
"I have certainly cried a few tears," she wrote. "But it is also exciting ... who knows what God will do next? We are now free to find out. And whatever it is, it is going to be awesome."
In the meantime, McKinley's has been serving holiday treats to "run through the bakery holidays we will miss this year." The bakery served Halloween and Thanksgiving cookies earlier this week; Christmas cookies will be available Thursday and Friday.
