Rendering of The Holly at 305 W. Daggett Ave.
The Near Southside is getting a new place to unwind with a glass of wine.
Located at 305 W. Daggett Ave., just west of South Main Street, the wine bar will be called The Holly and specialize in small-batch, natural wines with little to no additives, says owner Elizabeth Mears.
The Holly gets its name from the California holly, predominantly found near the central coast of the state, where many of the wines will be sourced. The name was also inspired by the Holly neighborhood of Austin, which will influence the bar's overall vibe.
The space will span about 900 square feet with a 500 – 600-square-foot courtyard — but the building housing The Holly will feature more than just the bar itself.

Along with an additional 900-square-foot retail space still waiting to be occupied just next door, the building has a residential component as well. Living upstairs will be The Holly's owners — Elizabeth Mears and husband, Stephen, who run building company Mission Street Design Build. The Mearses are building a private, 2,800-square-feet residence just above the wine bar, complete with a rooftop deck and garden space offering views of downtown.
The Mearses are Near Southsiders themselves — the couple previously lived in Fairmount and had been wanting to pursue a small-batch wine concept for a while. When they came across the lot between Daggett and Galveston avenues, they decided to sell their home and pursue the development, teaming up with North Richland Hills-based Bohannon Design Team to give the project a "modern nostalgic" exterior and interior inspired by California, Elizabeth Mears says.
She hopes to open in the late fall.
"We're really excited about being in the heart of the urban neighborhood that we love," she says.
