Bikes for Mission Arlington
Mission Arlington is bringing back its Bikes for Mission Arlington initiative in hopes of providing even more bicycles for families in need.
This nonprofit started out with two families who donated six bikes back in 2007. It has since grown — last year, over 2,000 bikes were distributed across Arlington and the Metroplex. According to Mission Arlington, the children who receive these gifts would otherwise not get anything for Christmas.
This year, the need for bikes is greater because of how many families were impacted by COVID-19. Tommy Saxon, board member for Bikes for Mission Arlington, says the organization does not have a specific goal for this year — they would just like to donate as many bikes as possible and focus on giving back.
“A bike represents an element of freedom, but for some families, it represents the ability to make it to school or work,” Saxon says. “It’s a mode of transportation that could change the path of a child or an entire family.”
This year, Bikes for Mission Arlington is meeting Dec. 12 to collect bicycle and helmet donations at 2229 W. Park Row Drive in Pantego. Those who would like to maintain that extra distance and donate from home can do so via the organization's website.
