City of Fort Worth
The City of Fort Worth recently announced the retirement of its official “Spokespup” Henry, who will be hanging up his public relations’ leash for the last time on February 17.
After 13 years of service with Fort Worth Animal Care & Control, Henry will be joining the City’s code compliance director Brandon Bennett for a journey into the sunset at the end of the month.
And rightfully so.
After all, these two companions have a bond that goes back to 2011 when Henry, a rescued black lab, was brought to the Chuck and Brenda Silcox Animal Shelter in poor physical health. As fate would have it, Bennett would meet Henry during a visit to the shelter sparking a bond between the two that still exists to this day. After the duos initial meeting, Bennett says he knew more could be done for the ill-fated canine.
In order to get the ball rolling on Henry’s recovery, Bennett along with many City staff members dedicated themselves to Henry’s convalescence — a team effort that paid off.
Over time, with tender loving care, Henry underwent a remarkable transformation, which only helped to strengthen the bond between him and Bennett. As the months rolled forward, Henry would eventually become the face of the Fort Worth Animal Shelter, which garnered him some local notoriety.
During his 13 years as the City’s “Spokespup”, Henry has participated in many special events, including accompanying former Mayor Betsy Price during her visits to local elementary schools.
“Serving as the City’s canine ambassador, Henry tirelessly worked to increase awareness regarding the challenges faced by homeless pets,” a city release states.
Another accolade mentioned on Henry’s behalf was his role in helping to raise over $1 million for the construction of a new medical treatment ward at the Chuck & Brenda Silcox Animal Care & Adoption Center, ten years ago. Records indicate this facility was opened in the Fall of 2014, which significantly aided in the shelter’s capacity to provide care for sick and injured animals.
To commemorate Henry’s years of service, the City is inviting the public to his official retirement party taking place from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday February 17 at the Chuck & Brenda Silcox Animal Care & Adoption Center. Besides offering some yummy refreshments, attendees will also have a chance to take a photo with Henry to mark this special occasion, which also includes a special adoption event.
“Henry, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your years of service,” a City release states. “You are, without a doubt, an exceptionally good boy.”
