The Amon Carter Museum of American Art is starting off the new year by announcing a milestone.
The museum announced Tuesday that it has received its largest endowment in history -- $20 million from the Walton Family Foundation, which the museum will receive over the next five years. Philanthropist Alice Walton, who currently chairs the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art Board of Directors in Bentonville, Ark., previously served on the board at the Amon Carter museum from 2004-2015.
The gift was given to honor longtime board president Ruth Carter Stevenson, who died in 2013. Stevenson's daughter Karen Hixon currently serves as president of the Amon Carter board.
“Mother and Alice were great friends and shared an extraordinary love and knowledge of art -- visionaries both," Hixon said. "Alice has been an important part of the Amon Carter and its board for many years. I am thankful for all she has taught me, and words cannot express my gratitude for this gift from the Walton Family Foundation in Mother's honor.”
According to a news release, the museum will use the donation to pursue additional temporary exhibitions and educational programs.
