Fort Worth-made film "Miss Juneteenth" has been garnering attention from festivals like Sundance and SXSW (as well as holed-up film buffs streaming the movie online at home). Now, the film has Variety's attention — as a possible Oscar contender.
In a recent article, Variety writer Clayton Davis listed "Miss Juneteenth" among "19 Oscar Contenders to Consider From the New First Half of 2020-2021" — namely for the Best Director category, praising Fort Worth native Channing Godfrey Peoples for her work.
The film tells the story of a single mother and former Miss Juneteenth pageant winner who enlists her daughter in the same competition, to her daughter's disdain. Yet the mother and daughter find a way to connect despite their disagreements — all while painting a picture of Black culture in America.
Davis writes, "The recollection of your past with the promises for what could have been your future is something that speaks to millions. The Sundance hit brings newcomer Channing Godfrey Peoples to the forefront of Hollywood. The Baylor University grad and Austin screenwriting fellow tackles themes of love, family, and so much more, showing that Peoples values story and imagination. Its charming depiction of Black America hopefully can find a voice in the race."
Peoples has said her experiences growing up in Fort Worth served as the inspiration behind "Miss Juneteenth." Locals may even recognize a few landmarks that appear in the film.
"'Miss Juneteenth' is the culmination of my life experiences, heritage, and culture," she said in a statement. "I was inspired by my own childhood being raised by a single mother and watching her quest to navigate her own life, while raising children. As a recent mother myself, I’m navigating many of the same issues that Turquoise faces — wanting the best for your child while being able to provide for her and maintaining your own hopes and dreams."
Whether "Miss Juneteenth" gets an official nod is up to the Academy. The next Oscars ceremony is scheduled for April 25, 2021.
In the meantime, Peoples will take part in a live online discussion for the Kimbell Art Museum's Artist's Eye series Saturday, Sept. 26, at 11 a.m. More info on that is on the Kimbell's website.
