Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra concerts are canceled through the end of the year due to the musicians' strike, but that's not stopping the holiday music from happening.
Orchestra musicians, under the name Symphony Musicians of Fort Worth, are planning to perform "A Fort Worth Family Christmas" not at Bass Hall, but at Will Rogers Auditorium on Nov. 27 at 4 p.m. The performance will feature guest conductor Ron Spigelman and Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Breggett Rideau, with a program including Nathan Wang's The Night before Christmas, Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a, and Christmas classics like "Joy to the World" and "Carol of the Bells" among other performances.
WFAA's Santa's Helpers will also be available to collect unwrapped toys for children in need.
The musicians also plan to perform a benefit concert Friday at Arborlawn United Methodist Church at 7:30 p.m., playing works like Dvorak's Symphony No. 9, "From The New World."
According to a news release by the musicians' union, Local 72-147 of the American Federation of Musicians, the concerts are being held as a "response to Management's lockout tactics" and "to give back to the community what Management carelessly takes away."
