What happens when you cross the head coach of the TCU football team and the president of Ewing Automotive Group? Only the most epic jam session ever.
For real, though — on June 30, Ewing Automotive Group president Fin Ewing and his band, Fin Ewing and the Wrong Direction, are playing a show at Billy Bob's Texas. Joining them on stage will be Horned Frog football coach (and up-and-coming country artist) Gary Patterson who, according to Billy Bob's, will also be bringing along the Nashville songwriters he's been working with and "a few other surprise guests."
Of course, most Fort Worthians are familiar with Patterson's venture into music. Patterson had always sung and played guitar as a hobby, but during the pandemic last year, he surprised everyone when he released his first single, "Take a Step Back," complete with a music video. He later followed up with another single, "Game On"; both songs are live on all platforms from Spotify to Apple Music.
Ewing's step into the music world is even more unconventional. So the story goes, per D Magazine, Ewing stumbled upon an article in 2016 that claimed anyone could learn to sing. So, Ewing — who had no experience singing nor playing any instruments — decided to test that concept, reaching out to vocal coach Bruce Wermuth to see if it could be done.
Turns out, it could; and ever since finding his voice, Ewing has been playing shows regularly at places like The Rustic in Dallas.
Now, Ewing and Patterson get to team up for a gig at the World's Largest Honky Tonk.
But it's not a show they're doing for themselves — the event will raise money for Patterson's charities, the Gary Patterson Foundation and The Big Good, both of which focus on providing educational opportunities and improving the livelihood of children and families in Fort Worth. Patterson leads The Big Good with another musician out of Fort Worth — oh, just some Grammy winner and international star named Leon Bridges.
