Drive-ins are becoming the hot ticket these days thanks to COVID-19, and the latest is setting up at Hip Pocket Theater in northwest Fort Worth.
The performing arts theater, whose plays are on hold due to the pandemic, will host the Rocket Cinema Drive-In — an old-school drive-in movie theater that'll screen classics like Charlie Chaplin's "Modern Times" and Buster Keaton's "The General," starting the weekend of Oct. 2.
Rocket Cinema is the brainchild of Justin Sherburn, the artistic director behind Austin-based indie chamber music group Montopolis, whose own work has been put on hold due to COVID-19. He plans to eventually combine live performance with traditional film screenings.
"With almost all of our Montopolis shows canceled in 2020, I had to figure out something to do with myself," Sherburn said in a news release. "I made a pretty risky gamble and took out a title loan on my van. I bought all the things for a mobile drive-in theater and called it Rocket Cinema. I'm excited about supporting local performers this fall anyway that I can."
