Cowtown or Funkytown? A new song by rapper Lou CharLe$ and roots-rock singer Grady Spencer sounds like both.
“Take Me Home” released everywhere Friday — a track marked by a catchy hip-hop beat paired with bluesy guitar lines, all while Spencer and CharLe$ trade off on vocals.
But please. This is no “Old Town Road.” Not even close.
Instead, it’s an ode to Fort Worth, with lyrics that pay homage to the big city’s small-town sense of community: “See the beauty in every color, creed, and kind / And when the times got rough, we stood side by side / So when life gets me down, spirit needs recharging / Find me in the Funk back where it all started / Cruising down Berry, basking in nostalgia / Back then, you couldn’t have told me this be the outcome.”
“Take Me Home” originally debuted Feb. 14 at Visit Fort Worth’s Annual Meeting and Breakfast as part of the organization’s campaign promoting the city as the “Modern West.” For a few months, listeners could only stream the song on Amplify 817, a music service run by the Fort Worth Public Library, that plays exclusively Fort Worth artists. Its wide release faced a two-week delay due to COVID-19. Now, the song can be found on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music, and other platforms.
Visit Fort Worth also has a music video featuring the song alongside a montage of clips featuring city scenes and local influencers.
