Massey's
The former Massey's Restaurant prior to its demolition in 2014.
Near Southside, Inc. is looking for an artist to give the former Massey's Restaurant sign an update.
The nonprofit's Art South program, in partnership with property developer Saigebrook Development and O-SDA Industries, has put a call out for an artist who can repurpose the sign and turn it into an art piece to be displayed inside the new Everly Plaza community. (Everly Plaza is a senior living community currently being built on the property where Massey's once stood. Massey's closed in 2011, its building demolished in 2014.)
The sign — a corrugated plastic panel with raised lettering that reads, “Massey’s Restaurant,” with subtext “Chicken Fried Steaks” — has been removed from its pole. Once the piece is done, it will hang on the south wall in the community room of Everly Plaza's community art space, where artist talks, demonstrations, and other events will take place.
Artists selected as finalists will receive a stipend to create a project concept and rendering for the selection committee to review. The project budget is $2,500.
Prospective artists can submit their qualifications here, and the deadline is Jan. 7. More information is available on the project brief.
