A brand-new big screen in the Foundry District aims to give exposure to small films you won’t find in theaters like Cinemark or Movie Tavern.
The Grand Berry Theater specializes in picking up indie titles from local filmmakers, and will hold a grand opening event this Saturday. Complimenting the one-screen, 60-seat theater at 2712 Weisenberger St. is a hangout area where you and your friends can grab a drink.
Founder Jimmy Sweeney’s idea for the venue was born from a desire for a dedicated space in Fort Worth for the indie film industry. During his time at Texas Christian University, he perceived a lack of such a space in Fort Worth.
“I grew up with a lot of friends passionate about film and it was something we were passionate about,” Sweeney says. “I didn’t have an avenue to watch here in Fort Worth, so I wanted to be part of changing that.”
Sweeney went to school to study supply chain management. Although this is his first business venture, which he says hasn’t been easy, he also says it’s been a ton of fun and serves as a great learning experience.
Grand Berry Theater’s been open for a few weeks now, but free popcorn, special giveaways, local business pop-ups, and a rotation of six indie films will properly usher in the venue this Saturday.
Hours are flexible right now, with the theater opening roughly 30 minutes before and after show times. See more at grandberrytheater.com.
