Funky Picnic took the funkiness up a notch when they revealed their plans to host their first annual Smoke ‘Em Out Homebrew Competition, a competition that will pit exclusively smoked beers against one another.
Like many beer trends that have come and gone, smoked beers — which include the likes of rauchbier and lichtenhainer — are having their moment in the sun. Each participant will receive up to 5 pounds of smoked San Jacinto 2-row heritage malt from TexMalt with which to design their brewing recipes. The malt notes include pecan, peach, and oak wood. From there, contestants will have free rein to craft the tastiest beer they can. The goal: a well-made smoked beer that balances both beer and smoke. The beer will be judged in one of six Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) categories: rauchbier, piwo grodziskie, lichtenhainer, classic style smoked beer, and specialty smoked beer. Funky Picnic will brew and put on tap the beer that receives the Brewer’s Choice award.
Those judging the brews include experienced brewers, beer judges, maltsters, and of course, smoked beer enthusiasts. The blind judging will follow all BJCP guidelines.
