Heim Barbecue's second home will no longer be at the former Thurber Mingus location, but the popular barbecue joint is still opening along White Settlement Road, just minutes away.
The restaurant will open its second location in the River District, inside the former the Veterans of Foreign Wars building at 5333 White Settlement Road. Originally Heim Barbecue was expected to open at 4400 White Settlement Road, where Thurber Mingus used to be. According to owner Travis Heim, the restaurant faced "a number of issues" in moving to that space.
"We had a meeting with the city and they would not allow us to build a smokehouse at that location so I finally decided I was tired of the hassle and we got out of the lease," Heim wrote in an email to Fort Worth Magazine. "[Wife and co-owner Emma Heim] and I were pretty upset about it because we loved that spot...but things happen for a reason."
The River District location will be 7,500 square feet, with space for a stage for live music and possibly a patio, according to Heim. The restaurant will be built within the next 12 months.
Known for its Bacon Burnt Ends, Heim Barbecue has a loyal following at its first location at 1109 West Magnolia Ave. In the River District, the restaurant will join other eateries like The River House and Salsa Limón.
