What you're doing to keep yourself occupied during this period of self-isolation and social distancing is easily one of the trendiest topics. Some are starting new hobbies such as crocheting, while others are having a go at mastering their culinary skills. Pose this question to Gary Patterson, head coach of TCU football, and he'll, surprisingly, tell you he's been working on an album … of music.
Perhaps growing tired of studying Texas Tech's offensive schemes while he shelters in place, Patterson is using this rare downtime to make a country music album.
"I used to write music when I was younger," Patterson said in an interview with ESPN's Sam Kahn Jr. "I actually sent somebody some of my music, and somebody's going to record it."
No details concerning who he's recording with have been disclosed, but we certainly hope he's partnering with one of Fort Worth's many talented musicians and/or producers. Regardless, per Patterson, it seems we'll be hearing a full-length LP sooner rather than later.
"I've always wanted to be able to [make an album]," Patterson says. "They've already been in the studio, they've already put it on tracks, and we're going forward. That's something that I never thought I'd get to do because I always stayed so busy."
Concerning when his players might take the practice field, Patterson won't commit, pointing to the numerous unknowns.
"Our doctors and our trainers, our chancellors, we're working on a plan of what that looks like, so if we do have an opportunity to do it, that we're able to do it safely."
Yet, despite setback due to COVID-19, Patterson remains optimistic we'll be able to see the Horned Frogs in Amon G. Carter Stadium in 2020.
"I think there will be [a season]," he says. "I think my optimism is very high. That's why I'm doing all the things I'm doing. At some point in time, whether it's fall or spring or it's shortened, whatever it is, we're talking about five, six, seven, eight different options. The closer we get to June 1, and people are starting to open things up more a little bit here in May, I think we're going to be able to make a lot better decision on what all that looks like. But right now, I think everything changes day to day."
