After making its way through the film festival circuit as well as the Oscar conversation among numerous publications, "Miss Juneteenth" may just be one of the buzziest films coming out of Fort Worth right now.
And, its writer and director — Fort Worth native Channing Godfrey Peoples — just snagged a big gig with NBCUniversal's TV production company, Universal Content Productions (UCP).
According to Deadline, Peoples has signed a first-look deal (in other words, a right of first refusal) with UCP to write, produce, and direct projects for the studio — including a TV adaptation of "Miss Juneteenth," which is currently in development.
"Miss Juneteenth," whose story focuses on a former beauty pageant winner who enlists her reluctant daughter in the same competition, has been garnering critical acclaim since debuting at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. The film most recently made an appearance at the 2021 Gotham Awards, in which Peoples received a nomination for the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award and Nicole Beharie took home the award for Best Actress.
The film is currently streaming on multiple platforms including Amazon Prime Video, YouTube Movies, and The Grand Berry Theater.
